Who do I contact about joining up?
We're able to accommodate new players of all abilities and ages, so you're welcome to apply via registering on Pitchero as described on the page "How to join, training dates and contacts" in this section. But if you have any queries, email us at drhc.juniors@gmail.com.
What equipment does my child need?
All children must have a fitting gum shield and shin pads in order to play. We strongly recommend that they also have a hockey glove to protect their knuckles. For beginners, we can lend a stick. Whilst any clean trainers are fine for gentle training, only hockey shoes have the harder, shock-absorbing construction to absorb the force of a hockey ball hitting a child's foot: if your child is going to play regularly, hockey shoes are a worthwhile investment.
In line with our policy on face guards (see below), junior members playing in senior teams should have their own face guard.
Can complete beginners take part?
Yes, of course. Sunday training for primary school age children includes a beginners group. Older children who want to learn are also very welcome. Please get in touch with us at DRHC.juniors@gmail.com to discuss.
Will my child get to play matches?
Definitely. We aim to include all children in matches. The only squads that are selected purely on ability are those competing in England Hockey championship competitions. For all other activities, any child who wants to play will be accommodated where logistically possible.
There’s a guide to how to set your child’s availability, and how to respond to selection, in the Membership section of the website here.
Does my child need to be registered on England Hockey's Game Management System?
All players in league matches, or competing in EH junior championship competitions, must be registered on GMS for the club to be able to select them and put them on a team sheet. We recommend all players of secondary school age, therefore, register on GMS at the start of the season to avoid last minute hitches in selection. This is usually done by the parent registering on the child's behalf. Full instructions are available on the England Hockey website under 'Game Management System'.
